A Brief Introduction to Contemplative Prayer
If this is something new for you the most important thing is to start slow and build from there. There is a reason this is referred to as a “spiritual practice” as we follow in the way of Jesus.
Find a quiet and comfortable place to read and to pray—a location free from interruption or distraction. Just as Jesus did when he removed himself from the crowds in order to pray.
Choose content to focus on that centers on God: It would be best to begin with a verse from Scripture or a part of a verse. Other things to focus on could be an attribute of God, something we receive from the Gospel, etc.
Meditate on this verse or idea. It is helpful to close your eyes and just repeat the verse or idea. Read it, ponder, and reflect on it.
Apply it by asking, “How would my thoughts, emotions, or actions, be different if I put this verse or idea into practice?”
Humble yourself by remembering your need for God. Remember your brokenness, pain, sin, and weaknesses, and bring those confidently to Him.
Now is the time to listen—Be still, be quiet, just be. Wait. Keep your eyes closed, your body still, and your mind on Jesus. You may (or may not) sense a message from the Holy Spirit.
After you finish it is helpful to journal what you experienced. What did you hear the Spirit communicating to you? What impressions did He leave with you? What did you learn about God or yourself? How do these things line up with Scripture? Is there anything you need to do to respond?
