Resources on Anxiety and Relationships

The sermon topic from Sunday was how to approach anxiety that arises in and through relationships. If this is a new topic for you, or you just want to dig more into it, we gathered some resources to help you.

Books

  • Managing Leadership Anxiety, Steve Cuss - This is a great intro to learning how anxiety affects relationships. Steve Cuss applies the gospel in helpful ways to this area of anxiety and provides plenty of practical advice. It is also a relatively short read.

  • The Leader’s Journey, by Herrington, Taylor, and Creech - This book is similar to Managing Leadership Anxiety. There is a lot of overlap, but there are some areas of focus that differ between the books, making these books good companions to each other.

  • Failure of Nerve, Edwin Friedman - This one is more dense and academic, but a good read if you really want to learn more about Family Systems Theory in relationships. I would start with the other two books, but this is a good one if you want to dive deep into the topic. Friedman was an ordained rabbi and practicing family therapist, so he won’t be coming from the topic as a Christian but will interact with Biblical Wisdom.

Video

  • This is a video from John Mark Comer at a conference a few years back where he is interacting with Family Systems Theory, especially Friedman’s work.
