Advent Guide

The word advent means “coming” or “arrival”, and the Advent season has historically been a time in church history where the church remembers Christ’s first advent and prepares their hearts and minds for Christ’s second advent.

“The Advent season is a season of waiting, but our whole life is an Advent season, that is, a season of waiting for the last Advent, for the time when there will be a new heaven and a new earth.” – Dietrich Bonhoeffer

The Advent season officially begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas and continues until Christmas Eve or Day. To help your family remember Christ’s first advent and prepare for his coming again, we have put together an Advent Guide.

Using the Advent Guide

This guide provides daily reading of Scripture and a few questions to help further our understanding of Christ’s first advent. Several songs are also included each week. The desire is for each of us to take time out of our days during this season to remember this incredible event. This can be done individually, as a small group or friends, or as a family. Parents, the readings are short enough to read with your kids. Questions are provided in bold that are a bit more kid friendly and can be used to help deepen their understanding.

This guide is not meant to be burdensome or guilt-inducing. It is intended to help us set aside time during this busy season to remember Christ’s first advent and our hope for Christ’s second advent. If you miss a day, just move on to the next day. If you aren’t in the habit of reading Scripture every day, this is a great time to cultivate that habit. Our hope and prayer is that this guide serves you well this season.
